In Kenya women gear up for County elections
Abdia Gole, 33, is a recent graduate of Business Management from one of the leading universities in Kenya, and a candidate for the upcoming County Assembly elections for Gorbo Ward, Marsabit County, in Northern Kenya. “I am going door to door, campaigning to urge women and youth to vote for me. High-level mission to Nigeria calls for women’s participation in decision making leadership in Peace, Security, and Development
The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed, joined by the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Under-Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Pramila Patten, and the African Union (AU) Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security Ms Bineta Diop, arrived in Abuja, Nigeria this week for a joint high-level mission themed: ‘Revitalizing Women’s Participation and Leadership in Peace, Security and Development’, with particular emphasis on the situation of women and girls in northeast Nigeria.

SDGs impossible without investment in women
The United Nations deputy secretary-general Amina Mohammed says achieving the Sustainable Development Goals would not happen without investing in women.
She led a high-level UN mission to Nigeria to assess women’s rights issues with particular emphasis on the north east, where more areas are opening up as the grip of Boko Haram weakens.
“We are not able to achieve our goal if we are only investing in half of the population,” Mohammed told a press briefing in the wake of their visit.

Nigerian women react, say rejection of 35 affirmation bill selfish, disappointing
Female lawyers and social commentators have responded to the rejection of the 35 percent affirmative action for women as ministers as well as 20 percent for women as commissioners in states by the Senate.
On Wednesday, the proposal failed at the upper legislative chamber as it garnered only the votes of 49 senators, instead of the 73 required to ensure the success of the bill.
