The late choreographer Kemi Omotoyinbo died during childbirth in a private hospital in Lagos on October 1^st, exactly twenty days after her wedding to her husband Godwin Eloanyi.  Her husband took her to the private hospital where she was in and out of labour for several days.

When it was certain that it wasn’t possible for her to go through the natural childbirth, the doctor informed her that she would be going through a caesarean section that will cost her #450,000.

Then they demanded an initial deposit of #300,000 before commencement of the operation. Her husband couldn’t raise the money immediately so he begged the hospital to carry on with the operation that he would pay the next day (October 1^st). But they refused!

The doctor refused and stated categorically that he would not move an inch, unless he pays the #300,000. It was at that point that kemi decided to forward messages to people she knows so she could get help. She got responses that money would be made available to her the next day and her husband went to beg the doctors again, still they refused.  No bank was open and nothing could be done until Thursday, October 2^nd but unfortunately, she gave up the ghost that night.

The doctors knew she had to go through emergency caesarean section; they could have saved her life and get the money later.

Sadly, Kemi passed away on the night of Independence Day exactly 20 days after her wedding, which was on the 13^th of September.

How long will this go on in Nigerian hospitals? How long? Rest in Peace Kemi Omotoyinbo!
